BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Lee Flames will be the top seed and face West Georgia at 8 p.m. (EDT) on Friday in the opening round of the eight-team 2024 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship. The double-elimination tournament will be played May 3-7 at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala.
The Flames finished with a 23-7 record in conference play while the Wolves posted a 14-16 mark. The two clubs played a three-game series on March 2-3 with Lee winning two of the three games.
Lee Coach Mark Brew's comments
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for West Georgia. They have a quality team and have a dynamic offense, being one of the top homerun and stolen-base teams in the GSC. They have one of the top relievers in the GSC and some solid arms to throw at us. It will be a tough challenge.
"We have played well in conference in all three phases of the game, and we need to continue that in post season. Defense will be a premium for all teams as mistakes are magnified during tournaments. We are excited about the opportunity in front of us this week."
West Georgia Coach Jeff Smith comments
"Offensively and defensively, we have been playing very well in the last five games. We can play with any team in the league, and we have shown that throughout the season."
"The bottom line is that we have to get quality starts from our starting pitchers. If they can pitch deep into the game, we don't have to dig into our bullpen as early and it gives our team a lot of confidence."
