Lacrosse Wins Overtime Thriller To Earn Birth Into GSC Championship

Box Score CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Taylor McGovern intercepted a pass and then fed it to Emma Bailey who scored the game winning goal in overtime to give the Lee University lacrosse team a 13-12 win over the University of Montevallo on Saturday. In a must win game, McGovern scored a goal with five seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Then just 90 seconds into overtime, they secure a spot in the Gulf South Conference championship next week.

The Lady Flames will go to Huntsville, Ala. on Friday, April 24 and will take on the top seed, Flagler College.

It was a very low scoring first quarter as Lee led it 3-1 after 15 minutes. Rosali Colangelo and Lanie Carroll each scored in the first five minutes. But then eight more minutes past before Colangelo scored to make it 3-0. Montevallo managed one goal in the period.

In the second quarter Emma Bailey and Lily Tomczik each scored but the period saw Montevallo score four times, and the game was deadlocked at 5-5. The third quarter also belong to UM as well as they outscored Lee 4-2. Bailey scored two more times in the third.

Kamille Kremkau gave Lee their eighth goal of the game. However, Montevallo went up 12-8 before the Lady Flames started the rally. Lily Tomczik scored twice and then Kremkau scored again with 5:50 left to make it 12-11.

With 1:18 left on the clock in the fourth quarter, UM turned the ball over. Lee went up the field and with 37 seconds left Tomczik had a free position shot. She could not convert, but Tara Orloski picked up the ball and found McGovern who scored while falling backward to tie the game at 12-12 and force overtime.

In overtime, Stella Starosciak picked up a green card to start the period, so the Lady Flames were down a player but had the ball. Kremkau then turned the ball over to the Falcons behind their own net. As they tried to pass it forward, McGovern stepped in front of the pass and stole it. She found Bailey wide open in front of the net and Lee won 13-12.

UM outshot Lee 30-28 but Savannah Weisman made nine big saves in goa for Lee.

Bailey had four goals on five shots while Tomczik had three goals and one assist. Kremkau added two goals and three assists.

Coach Megan Smith's Thoughts:

"Today was a total team effort. Trailing for most of the game, we dug deep and came together to pull out an amazing OT win. Lily stepped up big on the draw and her drives to goal. Sav annah locked down the goal for us! Taylor and Rosali rode extremely well especially in OT where Emma Bailey capitalized with her 4th goal of the game! I'm so proud of them and we are excited to have another week to be and work together!"
