Gulf Shores, Ala.- The Lee softball team used a seven-run seventh to power past Freed-Hardeman, 11-1 and claim a share of the Gulf Shores Invitational Gold Bracket Championship.

Faulkner, Auburn-Montgomery and Spring Hill also advanced in the Gold Bracket. The schools elected not to finish out the tournament since they are all members of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). 

With the victory the 11th-ranked Lady Flames move to 17-0 on the year. Coach Emily Russell's club was a perfect 5-0 in the weekend tournament and outscored their opponents by a staggering 50-4 margin. The loss drops Freed-Hardeman to 10-2 overall.

The game was close throughout with Lee holding a 4-1 advantage heading into the final inning. The high powered Lady Flames offense  would strike for seven runs in the top of the seventh however to put the game away. 

Ana Coscorrosa helped jump start the Lee attack hitting a solo home run to lead off the top of the third inning. Jennifer Ringle tripled and drove in three runs in the contest. Lexie Dean would add a pair of hits and Savanna Bell would follow suit going 2-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.

Angie Hughes started and worked six innings for Lee (9-0). Hughes gave up just one run and one hit. The freshman struck out four and walked four. Katie Deems came on and worked a scoreless seventh.

Sarah Elizabeth Cousar started for the Lions. Cousar worked five innings and gave up four runs on four hits. Kamara Trice came on in the sixth inning and was charged with seven runs in two innings of work. Trice gave up five hits and walked two.

Natalie Nelson registered the only two hits in the ballgame for Freed-Hardeman. She went 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Lee will put their undefeated record on the line on Wednesday when they head to Rome, Ga. to play last year's NAIA National Champions, Shorter University. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
