BRUNSWICK, Ga.- Led by stellar pitching and eight RBI by Dominique Hannah the Lee women's softball team remained unbeaten (12-0, 4-0) with a doubleheader sweep of the College of Costal Georgia (1-11, 0-2) Saturday afternoon.
Lee 9, Coastal Georgia 1
Katie Deems (2-0) pitched a near perfect five innings to lead the Flames to a 9-1 victory over the Mariners in game two. Deems took a perfect game into the fifth inning. With two outs the Flames committed an error and Carrie Parker finally broke through for the first Coastal Georgia hit of the game to drive in the lone run for the Mariners.
Lee struck for two runs in the first inning and three in the second. With the pitching of Deems the lead was more than safe. The Lady Flames tacked on four more in the fourth to expand the lead to nine.
The offense was led once again by the red hot Hannah. The right fielder went 2-for-3 with a home run and matched her game one total of four RBI. The sophomore also scored three runs. Jennifer Ringle added a hit and an RBI. Laurel Allen hit her first homer of the season and scored twice. Amanda Lynn rounded the eight-hit performance with a double and two runs scored.
Shelby Kelly started for the Mariners. She was chased quickly by the Lee offensive attack giving up five runs in two innings of work. Mindy Powell worked the final three innings. Powell gve up three earned runs on six hits.
Lee will put their undefeated record on the line beginning on Friday in Gulf Shores, Ala. as a part of the Gulf Shores Invitational. The Lady Flames will test Bethel University (Tenn.) and Blue Mountain College (Miss.) to begin the weekend tournament.
Lee 5, Coastal Georgia 2
Sophomore Dominique Hannah had three hits and drove in four runs to lead the Lee softball team over The College of Coastal Georgia, 5-2 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Lady Flames used a four-run sixth inning to open up a five-run lead on the Mariners. Pitching dominated on both sides up until that point as both starters were effective early. Lee sent nine batters to the plate in the sixth capped of by a three-run double from Hannah. The Mariners would add two runs in the seventh but would draw no closer.
The Lady Flames benefitted from another quality start from freshman Angie Hughes (6-0). The freshman worked seven innings and allowed just four hits. She struck out 10 Mariners and yeilded just two runs.
Lee pounded out 11 hits in the contest. Ana Coscorrosa had two hits and Lizzie Stevens added a pitch-hit RBI single.
Coastal Georgia starter Nichole Lewis matched Hughes pitch for pitch until she ran into trouble in the sixth inning. Lewis went the distance for the Mariners giving up five runs on 11 hits.
The lone offense for Coastal Georgia came in the final inning on a two-run homer by Christine Braddy. Shelby Kelley had two hits and scored a run.
