KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Lee sophomore outfielder Dominique Hannah was named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Player of the Year when the NAIA All-America committee released its 2013 Softball All-America teams on Friday evening.
"What an achievement for Dom," said coach Emily Russell. "I'm proud of the hard work she put in this year. She is very deserving of the recognition. She moved from hitting ninth in our line-up last year to hitting lead off or third. She stayed within herself and just did her thing. Dom also stepped up her defense and made some outstanding plays."
Hannah, the 2013 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Player of the Year, stood third in the NAIA in total hits (93), fourth in total bases (150), seventh in doubles (22) and 10
th in batting average (.482). On the year, she recorded nine home runs, four triples, 30 walks and scored a team-high 63 runs. She hit safely in 49 of 58 games and started the season on a 20-game hitting streak. Hannah led the Lady Flames to the NAIA Opening Round Championship and a spot in the 10-team national championship in Columbus, Ga.
Since the Player of the Year award inception in 1998, Hannah earns Lee University’s first such honor. Cotta is the first Eagle to become Pitcher of the Year since it began in 1999.
Ana Coscorrosa, Lee’s slugging and slick-fielding first baseball joined Hannah as first team All-Americans. Senior Katie Cotta of the national championship Concordia (Calif.) was honored as the NAIA Pitcher of the Year.
Coscorrosa earned MVP honors in leading the Lady Flames to the SSAC tournament title. She batted .463 for the season and collected 15 double, two triples and eight home runs.
"I'm proud of Ana becoming a first team All-American," said Russell. "She had another great season at the plate and she's one of the best fielders we have ever had at Lee. She did a great job for us this year of not trying to do to much at the plate and just making solid contact. Both Dom and Ana were really awesome leaders for us this year."
Four individuals are repeat First-Team All-Americans and three others return from the 2012 All-America Second Team.
