MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Lee University women's cross country team placed five runners among the top 10 finishers to claim the 2022 Gulf South Conference (GSC) Championship Saturday morning at the Montevallo Cross Country Course. With the win, the Lady Flames have now won the last six GSC Cross Country Championships.
"What a dominant performance," said Lee head coach Caleb Morgan. "We wanted to have all five scorers in the top 10. We were able to execute perfectly. Our women never take a championship for granted, they go out and give their all no matter the situation."
The 11
th-ranked Lady Flames posted 30 points to finish 19 points ahead of runner-up Mississippi College. The Choctaws had two runners in the top eight and put all five scorers in the top 14 to record 49 points. Alabama Huntsville was third with 63 points.
Johanna Wistokat of Christian Brothers University was the first of 97 runners to finish the 5K course. She won the individual championship with a time of 17:38.20.
Aria Hawkins was Lee's top finisher. The sophomore was third overall with a time of 17:56.80. Liza Kellerman was right behind in fourth (18:02.50). Lily Hare and Olivia McLain were the next duo to complete the race. Hare placed sixth (18:32.20) and McLain (18:33.70) was seventh. Danielle Horter was Lee's final scorer. She was 10
th overall at 18:42.60.
Megan Adams and Katie Krueger were the Lee spacers. Adams (19:10.20) was 16
th, while Krueger was 21
st with a time of 19:18.60.
Phoebe Moran stopped the clock at 19:37.30 to finish 27
th. Elizabeth Heckman and Elizabeth Beckham were Lee's last two runners. Heckman (19:39.90) placed 30
th with Beckham just behind in 31
st (19:40.00).
"Aria and Liza did a great job working together, as did Lily and Olivia. This is something we have strived to work on as we get into championship season. We are ready for the road ahead," concluded Morgan.
The Lady Flames advance to the NCAA Division II South Region Championships on November 18. The 6K race with be held at Holloway Park in Lakeland, Florida.
